A Guest in the House of the Sun

Haleakala - that’s Hawaiian for ‘house of the sun’, and it’s also the name of one of the islands’ most famous national parks. It’s said that the great hero Maui lassoed the sun from the peak of Mount Haleakala, to slow its progress across the sky, and that’s easy to believe when you stand beside the crater of this dormant volcano and watch what must be the most spectacular sunrises and sunsets in the world.

At night, the view is equally stunning, with the darkness of the open ocean contrasting with a brilliant starry sky.

If you’re staying in a Maui vacation condo, a visit to Haleakala is a must.

Haleakala takes a while to reach, but it’s well worth the effort. There’s road access right up to the summit of the mountain, so elderly and disabled visitors won’t miss out.

For those who’d rather hike, there’s lots to discover in the surrounding area, with volcanic deserts giving way to swathes of overgrown wild country and, beneath them, tropical jungle bordering the sea. Spectacular waterfalls tumble down precipitous cliffs and bright streams sparkle amidst the greenery.

If you prefer to travel by bike, Haleakala National Park also boasts excellent cycling trails, making it easy to cut through rough country. You’ll want to disembark from time to time, though, because there all all sorts of things here which reward viewing in detail.

Besides the spectacular vistas visible from the cliff tops, there are rare animals and plants to see and rare birds singing in the trees. Haleakala is a place where you can fall in love with nature all over again.
