The Sunset Town of Kailua

Have you ever seen the sun set over the open ocean? Kona sunsets are famous the world over, and the most beautiful of them all can be seen from the region’s central town, Kailua. With a wide bay opening onto thousands of miles of open water, this romantic fishing town looks out onto some of the most beautiful sights on Earth.

A curious place to visit, Kailua is a town caught between a glamorous past and a charmingly modest present. Once home to kings, it now provides shelter to tourists, yet their presence never seems to alter its natural character. If you want to see the real Hawaii on your Kona vacation, this is the place to do so. And you can see much more besides. Kona is home to several annual sporting events, and it also offers ways for visitors to get involved. Regular boat trips can take you out into the ocean on diving or dolphin-watching expeditions. Bicycle hire makes it easy to visit the interior of the region. And when you want to relax, there are some fabulous places to eat.

Kona has long been famous for its restaurants, and rightly so. There you can enjoy traditional island cuisine, eat fresh fish caught in the bay, or enjoy the spectacular fusion cooking created when island styles impact with foreign influences. You should also make sure to drink a cup or three of the local coffee, which is widely known for its exotic taste and rich aroma. Although there are plenty of places to buy souvenirs, it’s often coffee which visitors are most keen to take home with them.

With so many things to do, and with plenty of condos available for visitors wanting to experience the authentic atmosphere of Kona life, Kailua is a must for any Kona vacation. With its charming traditional architecture shadowed by palms, it’s the perfect place to watch the sun set on another beautiful Hawaiian day.
