Oahu and Waikiki are best known for their terrific sandy beaches and gentle surf. The combination of warm water, gentle waves and beautiful scenery is perfect for water activities of all types. While visiting Oahu, it’s nearly mandatory that you spend time playing in the water. These four family friendly water activities are sure to please the whole gang.
Hawaiian Fire Surf Camp
The Hawaiian Fire Surf Camp is run and founded by three Hawaiian firefighters. Trained in CPR, open water rescue and medical first aid, this group of instructors ensures that your little ones are in good hands while learning to surf the waves. The instructors are very knowledgeable of Hawaiian culture and love to share their knowledge and enthusiasm for all things Hawaiian.
Students are picked up at the hotel in the mornings and taken to a secluded beach with perfect beginner waves. Lunch is provided and students are returned to the hotel in the afternoon. Adults and families are all welcome to attend these great safe surfing lessons.
Hananuma Bay State Underwater Park
This natural inlet is surrounded by coral reefs and creates a warm water safe haven for family fun. The area has the reputation for being a world class snorkeling site for good reason; you will find some of the most exotic Hawaiian fish while visiting Hananuma Bay.
Snorkeling equipment can be rented at the visitor’s center if you arrive early enough.
The water is so clear that children who are too small to swim can view coral and brightly colored fish simply by walking along the shoreline. The fish here are tame enough to eat right out of your hand! Fish pellets and underwater cameras are sold as well to help you capture a favorite memory of your children hand feeding exotic fish.
To limit the effects of the public visitations on the natural habitat, the Park is closed on Tuesdays and the number of visitors admitted each day is limited and enforced by the local police. Get there early for a good spot on the reef.
The Outrigger Waikiki on the Beach
This all purpose activities service is open to all visitors, not just the hotel’s guests. They offer outrigger canoeing, surfing lessons and a variety of other beach activities for the whole family.
A favorite family activity on Waikiki is the six person outrigger canoe where the whole family piles in with a guide and paddles out to sea, just to let the waves carry you back to the shore. No canoeing experience is necessary and the trip is safe for the whole family.
Sans Souci Beach
Sans Souci Beach is where the locals go to get away from the crowds. The balmy waters and quiet beaches are perfect for families with small children and older couples who prefer a less crowded beach experience.
Spending time in the water can be enjoyable and safe for the whole family with these four suggested destinations on Oahu. Be sure to schedule enough time at each location to thoroughly enjoy the sights and sounds of each site during your trip for a well rounded Hawaiian experience.
