Hawaii life is certainly different from life on the mainland. In fact, some would argue that Hawaii life is unique from anywhere else in the world. If you are curious about what it is like to live in Hawaii, consider these Hawaiian facts.
Hawaii Life: True Cultural Diversity
Hawaii is nearly midway between Los Angeles, California and Japan. This makes Hawaii a popular destination for Americans and Asians. Asian residents of Hawaii include Japanese, Filipino, Chinese, and Korean residents and constitute nearly 43% of the Hawaiian population.
Native Pacific Islanders, including native Hawaiians, also make up a sizeable portion of the Hawaiian population (nearly 10%). Around 7% of the Hawaiian people are Hispanic or Latino. Hawaii is truly a melting pot of ethnic backgrounds.
Hawaii Life: the Weather
Hawaii is known for its balmy, 70-85° weather. Contrary to popular belief, Hawaii does experience distinct seasons, mainly summer and winter. However, you will not find shedding leaves in the fall, or snow in the winter like in mainland America. Snow can be found in the mountain peaks, but never at sea level. Winter is considered the rainy season and August is the hottest month in Hawaii. Because of the frequent rainstorms, rainbows are a common occurrence in Hawaii. The average daily temperature year round is 75 degrees Fahrenheit.
Hawaii Life: Schools
Hawaii has a large number of private schools for children. Public school education is also available on the Islands as are several Universities for higher education. Special schools that teach in the traditional Hawaiian language are also found throughout the Islands. Information about Hawaiian public schools can be found by visiting Hawaii.Gov.
Hawaii Life: Jobs
Many Hawaiian residents are employed in the agriculture or service industry since tourism and agriculture are the main driving forces of the Hawaiian economy. Pilots, tour guides, water sport instructors, servers, housekeepers, and cooks are found in abundance on the Hawaiian Islands.
Hawaii Life: Other Considerations
- While Hawaii is a part of the United States, many residents speak Hawaiian and local Hawaiian pidgin in addition to English.
- Hawaii does not participate in Daylight Savings Time
- The Islands have a law prohibiting smoking closer than 20 feet from a public doorway or open ventilation of a building or in partially enclosed spaces.
- Dress on the Hawaiian Islands is casual for the most part. Brightly colored, loose shirts, shorts and sandals are the most common type of dress. Due in part to the Asian cultural influence on the Islands, shoes are seldom worn inside the house.
Life on the Hawaiian Islands is a unique, tropical experience. A few facts about life in Hawaii can help you get a feel for distinctive the Hawaiian lifestyle.
