Okay place to stay, some cons

Overall this is a cool place to stay in Princeville because of its close proximity to the beach and St. Regis. However, there were several downsides: - No full kitchen (no microwave, no way to make hot water for tea) - Places were a bit dated and smelled of mildew (which is somewhat to be expected with how wet Princeville is, but they could stand to have carpet pulled and replaced with tile) - Walls are EXTREMELY thin. You can hear your neighbors cough, talk, clear their throat, pee, flush, etc. - This place wants to nickel and dime you with the resort charge and threats of other ways you may be charged plastered all over the inside of the condo - We were without power for 16 hours due to a storm and were not proactively comped our resort charge for that day - Front desk folks weren't especially friendly Some more pros: Awesome pool, restaurant has 2 vegan options which I really appreciate, groundskeepers are super friendly, tennis courts, beautiful grounds, nice views of the mountains. less

Owner/Manager Response

Aloha Georgia, Thank you for taking the time to post a review for unit 1526 at the Hanalei Bay Resort. We are happy to hear you enjoyed the resort amenities and the condos amazing mountain views. The direct beach access is definitely a plus as it is rare in Princeville. This unit is advertized as a studio unit that does not have a kitchen so it should not have been a surprise and is what you booked. The owner is considering a remodel of this unit in the future so with most remodels they do put tile down instead of carpet so I am sure that will be considered. The lockout door to the next unit is similiar to a hotel with connecting doors so there is some sound that will come through. The pictures on the website are very detail as well as the video which goes through the whole unit room by room and allows you to scan and zoom to any area which gives you a really good perspection of what to expect in this unit. The video was done very recent. This allow every guest to decide if the decor and the updates are something that is exceptable to them and presents no surprises. We are sorry that the power was out for a bit during the unusual wind storm but of course that is out of our control and not something we could have predicted and something that the whole island was dealing with. This is a 3rd party vendor which nobody was compensated for and all had to deal with.

Awesome Spot!

Room #1526 had an amazing structure-free, unobstructed view of the lush green forest and stunning mountains, with a very nice porch to sit in the morning, sip your coffee and gaze at. Clean room, with decent little kitchenette area with all the amenities except a sink. Perfect for the get-up and go traveler who still loves a stunning view in the morning or evening! less

What a View!

This condo offered one of the BEST vacation views we've ever had from the balcony. The resort was clean and located in an ideal location on the north side of the Island, close to Hanalei Bay and Tunnels Beach. The room offered everything we needed for our stay, with a fridge, coffee maker, towels, cutlery, lunch box, and boogie boards! The bathroom could use some updating, but this room/resort choice is the complete package for your Hawaiian getaway! less

Owner/Manager Response

Aloha, Thank you for posting a review.  We really appreciate feedback from our guests about their stay.  The Hanalei Bay does have such great views throughout the property! We are glad you found use for the items this unit offered.  We hope you can come again!

Very dingy - not recommended unless you have very low standards

The condo is located on a beautiful property, but is very, very badly in need of an update. We felt as though we were staying at an old $39 interstate motel room when we were inside the unit. The carpet is crusty and so old. The bathroom is large but moldy. Even the beach chairs were nasty. The unit isn't in a great location within the property. The view of the mountains is obstructed by a palm tree. The restaurant on the property is only open from 3-9pm, and no places near by to walk to. Of the many places we stayed on the Hawaiian Islands, this was our least favorite. Would recommend the property to other travelers, but not this unit. less

Owner/Manager Response

Aloha, We appreciate you taking the time to post a review for the unit 1526 at the Hanalei Bay Resort.  This unit does have multiple pictures on the websites to be able to determine and see exactly what you are booking and know what you have choosen.  This condo is very reasonably priced considering the destination and the resort location.  The location within the resort with the beautiful mountain views instead of the water views is also considered in the great room rate.  The pictures on the website also give you a true image of the view you will be seeing, palm trees and all. We did have the housekeepers check the carpet for us after your departure.  The carpet is not brand new but it also is not so old.  We could not find it to be crusty and there were no stains anywhere and it seemed to be in good shape.  We also did not find any mold in the bathroom except in the wicker laundry basket where perhaps some wet clothes might have been left to long. We are taking care of that.  Kauai is more of a rural destination and not a big city atmosphere like Oahu and this is what draws our guests to this island.  Therefore most things are not in walking distance.  However this resort does have direct beach access right from the resort, an abundance of amenities and the mutliple restaurants at the St Regis are in walking distance right next door.  One of the restaurants there is the Makana Terrace which is amazing for breakfast in the morning on the 8th floor overlooking the amazing views of the Hanalei Bay and Bali Hai!

Great stay at the Hanalei Bay

We had a great stay at the Hanalei Bay! The resort itself was wonderful and the staff was so helpful and friendly. The condo was also great for our stay. If there is one thing that makes this not a 5 star review is that the condo is a bit outdated but it was Very clean and welcoming! less

Amazing Resort, Great Condo!

We absolutely loved Condo 1526 at Hanalei Bay Resort. The resort itself was incredible. Gorgeous pool, golf courses, and various areas to enjoy the views of the bay, including a romantic electric fireplace on the lawn. I was impressed by the natural rocky design of the pool area, especially the warm sandy bottom of the jacuzzi (unfortunately it was broken for two days of our stay, but understand that sometimes you run into these technical issues!). The views from the balcony were incredible and fairly private. We loved waking up and enjoying our morning coffee with the views of the waterfalls, mountains, floral trees and birds! There was nightly music at the cocktail lounge, and the woman at the concierge (I think her name was Kohu? Apologies if that is incorrect!) was very friendly and helpful. Ask her for any recommendations on local events going on the week of your stay. Comfortable bed, clean & spacious room, fridge & freezer, and shops nearby for all necessities. The local town is full of unique stores and galleries. We recommend Kauai Nut Roasters and the Hanalei Bread and Coffee Co, Haena beach park and Tunnels beach, as well as wandering down to the lovely beach below the resort. The drive to the South Shore and Poipu area is well worth it to enjoy the sunset views and whale watching. No surprising extra fees, just the rate you agree to and the resort fees which are outlined on the Aloha Condo website! Mahalo! less

Nice resort, but room was lacking

Hanalei Bay Resort is a beautiful place to stay. The staff was friendly and accommodating. The reason for my 3 stars is that we rented a Condo with a kitchen so that we could cook our meals to save money. Our "kitchen" consisted of a microwave, toaster oven, and a small fridge. No sink to wash dishes... we washed our dishes in the bathroom sink. Also there was no stove to cook food on. I don't like microwaving my food, and what can you really cook in a toaster oven? They are pretty much useless appliances. We were really disappointed with the false advertisement of our booking. Not sure that I would book here again. You don't get what you paid for. less

Owner/Manager Response

Aloha, Thank you for your review and noting the beautiful resort.  This unit does not have a kitchen but just a kitchenette as the website does describe in detail.  We have listed exactly what the kitchenette does include so each guest can make a decision as to if the unit is right for them and what they need.  I suspect that if you were looking at other units at the Hanalei Bay Resort you might have gotten them confused and booked the wrong unit.  The units/condos at the Hanalei Bay Resort vary from one unit to another quite a bit.  Some are studios, some are studios with full kitchens, some are one bedrooms, two bedrooms etc.  This unit is just like a typical hotel room/bathroom and a kitchenette to accommodate.  For a studio room with a very reasonable rate the convenience of the mini fridge, the microwave, the coffee maker, dishes, blender and toaster oven are a plus as well as the ample counter space.  We have found that many guests even with just a kitchenette can prepare great meals by having salads/friuts and using the resort BBQ's for items such as surf and turf.

Relaxing for the most part!

This resort is beautiful! The grounds are lovely and if you're into tennis this is the place for you. Relaxing pool and our room was pretty central with a cool view of the mountains. The room is cute but it has a common door with the room next to it. It's locked both sides but it isn't sound proof at all. We could clearly hear the neighbors when they would just be having a conversation. It was more relaxing to be out of the room when they were in there. The AC worked great but the night before we left I turned it on and a huge cockroach flew out! There aren't a lot of places to eat near by. Walking down to the quiet little beach is a must for the sunset! less

Owner/Manager Response

Aloha Thank you for your feedback and letting us know how your stay at unit 1526 went.  We are so happy to hear that you did enjoy your stay and the beautiful resort.  The lockout room does have double doors but just as a hotel so sometimes the noise will filter through.  Island living and the tropical environment does bring with it the unwanted pests. The exterior of the building are sprayed on a regular basis and we will be doing regular interior services.   Kauai is not the city atmosphere with lots of shopping and restaurants all about and is what attracts lots of people to the layed back and serene environment.  The resort does have a bar/lounge offering some food choices.  Next door is the St Regis which also has a great choices in restaurants.  Then throughout Princeville in a range of 1 to 2 miles are several other choices.  Driving down to Hanalei which is about  10mins is another options for a variety of restaurants. Thank you again for your comments and we hope you can come again.

Great Basic Condo at a Wonderful Property!

We loved our stay at the Hanalei Bay Resort! The property was a Hawaiian heaven. The beach down below was perfect for sunbathing and snorkeling. The new bar "Happy Talk" was excellent to catch happy hour or watch a game overlooking the property. The pool and Jacuzzi was perfect to soak in. Would have loved to use the gym facilities but ran out of time. Loved the nearby quirky town of Hanalei and the great restaurants, farmers markets, boutique shops, etc. Hiked the Napali coast which was a short scenic drive. We didn't get a single drop of rain. This unit is very basic but clean. Updated kitchenette area which was useful. Bathroom could use some updates but everything worked great and served it's purpose. Bed was super comfy. View of the valley/mountain from the balcony was gorgeous. Our only complaint is that the shower could use a new curtain as it smelled like a sweaty gym locker room. Overall a great home base at a wonderful property that we will visit again on our next trip to Kauai. Thanks for having us! less

Comfortable and spacious

HBR 1526 is a very spacious studio. The bed and pillows are very comfortable, and it is nice to have a dining table and chairs, and full counter for "kitchen" prep (although have to use sink in bathroom). Do your research; most HBR studios do not have the dining table and chairs, and have very small prep space. The location is private and serene, with the lush tropical landscaping and mountain views, easy access to main building and pool. The Aloha Condos staff was very responsive. When we arrived there was only one towel and one washcloth for the 8 days, so I called and even though housekeeping staff had left for the day, she came back and took care of the problem. The not so great details? The tub didn't drain well; in fact, the "closer" didn't work at all so you can't fill up the tub to take a bath. The grout around the tub needs to be replaced, it is stained and unsightly. Otherwise, the bathroom is fine; good showerhead. There could be some type of drawers added under the sink; that would be a nice touch. The large upholstered chair in the living space was beautiful to look at and very comfortable, but had a strong musty/mildew smell so I couldn't sit in it. I have allergies to that type of thing. Nice beach items - cooler, chairs, umbrella, boogie boards. There was also a welcome basket that was a nice touch. Overall, a good stay. less

wonderful stay

We stayed for 9 nights in April and it was wonderful. The studio was spacious, clean, and well-equipped with everything we needed. It was nice to see that there were plates, bowls, glasses, utensils, a microwave, a toaster oven, a little fridge, and lots of beach gear available for use. It is also close to the parking lot, which is a nice touch. While there are more updated units at this place, the price was right and our stay was extremely comfortable. Can't wait to stay again! less

Spring Break 2016

The Hanelei Bay Resort was the perfect place to take a real nice vacation from the hustle and bustle of big city life. This location in Princeville is ideal for families that is looking for tons of water, hiking, tennis and other fun activities. This location, I consider high end like a country club with all amenities. Close to supermarkets and restaurants for everyday needs. Super Like!!! less

Owner/Manager Response

Thank you for your review and taking the time to post!  The Hanalei Bay Resort is a special place and the island does have lots of fun activities to experience.  The island is a very serene and relaxing atmosphere and certainly is a place to unwind.  Thank you again for your review!

Excellent Value - Very pleased!

I was lucky to get this place during the crazy 2015 Christmas/NYE holiday week, and felt like I hit the jackpot. There are obviously nicer accommodations on the island and along the north shore, but they are absurdly expensive. HBR 1526 is PLENTY adequate for almost anybody. I reviewed every lodging option imaginable and found this to be the best value by a mile. Nice people, very clean and well equipped room (TV, entertainment, kitchen, etc.), easy check-in/out and good location within Princeville. The management group is top-notch and helped me out a lot. It was great to not need a full-week reservation which is common during this high traffic time period. The thing to consider about this unit is that it's a hybrid of hotel and condo. The kitchen area is well stocked but small. You get a toaster, microwave, mini-fridge and full set of housewares. The TV has lots of channels, DVD and stereo. The bathroom has all the necessities and stuff for the beach including chairs and even boogie boards. The unit is smaller, so if you plan to spend a lot of time in the room, a.) you're visiting the wrong island and b.) this unit might be too small. It wasn't for us- it was the perfect size for a base of daily excursions and fun. The famous HBR restaurant is still closed after all this time, which is tragic and frankly inexcusable. But that's not the fault of this unit- it should be ready winter 2016.. The patio is great and the view of the mountains is beautiful. I would definitely stay here again, or recommend for anyone who is looking for value in their Kauai accommodations. less

Nice room with a great view

Very nice room with a great view. Bed was super comfortable. Nice furniture. Would have been good to have lights on the balcony to dine out there at night. Very well stocked with snorkeling equipment, boogie boards and beach chairs.

good 1 bedroom unit in Princeville

Overall we were very pleased with our stay here. The room: very nice, the interior is well-furnished and it's basically like a nice hotel room. There is a limited kitchenette with microwave, toaster oven, and small fridge. No stove. Good enough for keeping perishables and drinks cold and toasting up a bagel in the morning. The unit has small coolers, snorkeling gear, beach chairs, and a boogie board which was unexpected and really great. I did lot of searching in Princeville/Hanalei and this was the best value for a one bedroom I could find, it's a great deal for the area. The view of the mountains is spectacular. It's extremely close to the parking which we liked since we were frequently leaving to visit sights and restaurants. The resort: The pool is very nice. The beach at the bottom of the hill is literally "picture-perfect" for viewing sunsets off the Napali coast, probably the best sunset spot on the island (besides the St. Regis bar which is directly above and you can access directly from this beach). We did not use the tennis courts but they looked well-maintained. The landscaping/grounds on the property are really nice. The downside: it did become annoying having to drive out for dinner every night, which was the only option with no restaurant on-site or a more full kitchen. Also most restaurants in Princeville are at resorts (overpriced) or at the shopping center (not good) so we drove into Hanalei most nights. That got old. The daily construction in progress on the restaurant/bar was also distracting, it is right next to the main pool. Those were the only issues I had, we still had a great stay and amazing trip, and loved the north shore. less

— Matthew, Stayed 09/17/2015

Hot in Hanalei

We enjoyed our 12 day stay at Hanalei Bay Resort. The only concerns were the A/C noise from the lanai because the adjacent unit kept it running around the clock, the construction mess, and the main access to our unit's building being through the resort's service and garbage area. Otherwise it is a beautiful setting and location. Thanks ! less

— Peter, Stayed 09/16/2015

Perfect on a budget

My family stayed in this room for one night. It had a comfortable King bed, and a twin pullout that was also comfy. The kitchenette had everything we needed, just bring your own food and drinks. It was quiet with a nice mountain view. We took the back way in to the building which isn't the nicest part of the property, but once you are in the room it makes no difference. probably be more economical if you stayed for more than a few nights since there is a cleaning fee. This was a great room to have if you are on a budget. The manager was very accommodating, giving us an early check in and a late check out. Mahalo! less

Aloha, Thank you for posting a review for unit 1526 at the Hanalei Bay Resort. It is always helpful to get feedback from our guests so that we can make sure our guests have a pleasant vacation. It is good to hear you had all that you needed and the rate was very reasonable. The back entrance to this unit is a shorter route which most guests seem to opt for but it can be accessed by going through the resort and around for a more scenic experience. We hope you can come back again! Thank you for staying with us! Aloha and Mahalo

Beautiful surroundings and peaceful stay!

We loved Hanalei Bay Resort. Staff was extremely helpful and friendly. The grounds were immaculate and lush. We loved waking up to an amazing view of the mountains and hearing all the birds from our lanai. The seats for viewing the sunset were spectacular. We can't imagine staying elsewhere. less

Good value and beautiful resort

We moved into Condo #1526 for the last 2 nights of our trip (stayed in another condo for the first 11 nights). We were apprehensive about moving to this condo, having been in a very nice condo (#4324), but at least we were still at HBR. We were pleasantly surprised at how spacious this studio felt. It felt actually bigger than our other unit. There is a nice sized bar/countertop area (that the other condo #4324) did not have, which made preparing snacks, drinks etc much easier. Additionally, the fridge was bigger than we had in the other unit. Although we missed the ocean view, we actually enjoyed the quiet mountain view. We did not have neighbors the first night, however we could tell the difference the 2nd night. We could definitely hear more voices and talking and banging sounds from next door, and above us (something we did not experience in #4324), however it didn't detract too much from our experience. The bed felt very comfortable also. For the lower cost of this unit,we felt it was a great value. If you are uncomfortable with any sounds from units above or next to you, you may not like this unit as much, but it didn't bother us much since we were so tired at the end of the day anyway. Some people do not like that the parking for this bldg. leads you past the maintenance/trash area, but we didn't mind. we actually appreciated parking closer to our unit and we liked waving to our friendly golf cart and maintenance crew anyway. Very nice people. We did notice that the microwave turning plate did not spin, causing the contents to cook unevenly, burning on one side. There is a nice toaster oven though, which we didn't have in the other unit. Also something that is nice is that the toilet is in a separate room (can close the door), from a large dressing/vanity/sink area, which gives the feeling of added space as well. If on a budget and want a descent place, this would be a good choice. We loved the resort, - the pool/jacuzzi is amazing. People very friendly. less

Beautiful Condo

My husband and I stayed in this condo during June of 2012. We were travelling with other family members, but their condo was to small, so we rented this one as well. We liked the beach access (with fairly decent snorkeling)and our daughter loved the pool. The staff were very friendly and took care to assist us with my mother-in-law who has some physical disabilities. We would stay here again. less

pleasant

Nice lanai (good bird watching!), nice condo/studio, pleasant stay. If a few frongs of a coconut tree were cut would have an even better view of the amazing waterfalls in the background

Good room for the money!

This condo was a good for the price we paid. It was more than adequate, there was a coffee pot, blender, bar fridge, toaster oven, cutlery and the bathroom was large. Enjoyed the stay. Thanks to owner of Condo 1526!!

A really nice place to base yourself on kauai

This simple but tastefully decorated and comfortable condo was the ideal accomodation for which to base ourselves while exploring Kauai. The kitchenette was ample and had everything we needed, the bed large and comfortable. The only shortcoming was the common doorway to the adjacent condo which was to enable a large family to use both units if needed, although entry was not possible between units during our stay we did experience quite audible conversations from the other guests next door, sometimes in the early hours of the morning. This might be easily fixed with a fitted peice of 'foam' insulation that could be left in the door space when not being used as a thoroughfare? Apart from that, it is a very comfortable unit that I would highly recommend to others. The staff at the Hanalei Bay Resort were excellent. less

— Kim, Stayed 05/15/2011

Information I wish I had known

Was not aware of $25 check in fee until my final payment had been made. Because I am slightly disabled, the stairs were very difficult for me and I was unable to use any of the resort amenities for which we paid a daily use fee. I would have looked at other properties if I had known of the stairs (especially) and the use fees for things I could not have used. We found the room clean and very nice although it is somewhat odd that one has to wash dishes in the bathroom as there is no sink in the kitchenette. I would recommend this place to others if the stairs didn't bother them, but would not (could not) rent this property again. less

— Kathleen, Stayed 03/23/2011

Great location, Value, with minor Flaws

Great spot and excellent Price. Rooms are a little too close together which means you can hear you neighbours' conversations (and they yours). A little too isolated from food given the distance of the shopping centre and high cost of the St Regis. Need to get that restaurant running, especially for Breakfast. Other than that, this place is great. less
