The Caves of Hanalei

A vacation in Hawaii doesn’t need to be a quiet vacation. Some people are content to lie around in the sun, but if you’re more adventurous, you’ll find that there’s lots to do on a Kauai vacation. Condos on the northern coast of the island, in the old settlers’ town of Hanalei, make a perfect base from which to explore some of the area’s fascinating caves.

Hanalei bay is famous for its beautiful beach, which is a great place to deposit less adventurous family members whilst you go exploring. Although the beach itself is calm, the water to one side of it is too fierce for swimming, and this is an indication of the sort of conditions which shaped the island in the distant past. There are small caves all over the Hanalei area, but there are also some spectacular large ones.

Maniniholo cave, though named after a fish, is in fact the largest dry cave on the island. Although it was partly filled in by a tsunami in the 1950s, it still reaches 300 yards down into the mountainside, and if you scramble upwards you’ll find a small passage which takes you out far up above. The cave is comparatively safe to explore and you won’t need special equipment.

Further along the coast, Waikanaloa cave presents more of a challenge. Names after the ferocious sea god who was said to dwell underground, it has only been explored about 100 yards in and should not be attempted unless you’re part of a team with the proper equipment.

Just visiting its entrance, however, can be quite an experience. Next door to it you’ll find Waikapalae cave, which is also largely submerged. Both these caves are of interest to scuba divers because they contain unusual species of native fish.

If you want to do some exploring on your holiday but would like to visit a spot where the rest of your family can enjoy themselves too, Kauai vacation condos offer the perfect home away from home.
